about

This is a compilation of songs written during the "American misery" period of my songwriting. Kevin moved with me from our "Dust Bowl Flowers" folk music and switched to electric guitar. Scott learned bass to play in the band. I was introduced to Jon through my brother-in-law. Kara and I had played a few gigs previously as a two-piece "guitar and viola" songwriter band. We rented a room in a dilapidated brick building we dubbed "The Coffin Factory." Jon set up his 8-track ADAT machine and we recorded a demo tape that we used to get a handful of gigs. "Gospel, Inc." was the best of these initial recordings. We made a full-length album in a basement studio in Fond du Lac, but the recordings were not great, so only three are included here. In the weeks before the band dissolved, we recorded "Arkham" and "My serial killer" as well as one other song ("Fourteen days after the date of the disaster") that showed us starting to find our way forward creatively from a songwriter-driven project to a full band project. Alas, it was not to be. But here's to late night practices, pizza at 1am, cigarettes and skateboards by the train tracks, freight elevators, shirtless punk bands, youth group kids, and hand made cassette tape covers.
